Wien Filter

Wien filters are used to separate charged particle beams by the velocity of the involved species by using orthogonally superimposed magnetic and electric fields. By varying the electric field, only a certain ion species characterized by its charge-to-mass-ratio and its energy/velocity can pass the Wien filter. The size of the entry and exit apertures and the magnetic field have an enormous effect on the resolution and the applicable mass and energy range of the used ions.
