Great to be part of the GSI/FAIR Roadshow – thank you for the opportunity and the excellent discussions. We particularly appreciated the strong interest in our R&D portfolio, including ion sources, ion optics, ion diagnostics, and complete ion irradiation systems. The exchange with the GSI teams provided valuable insights and reinforces our commitment to developing compact, high-performance solutions for advanced ion beam applications. The GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research in Darmstadt is a world-class facility dedicated to high-tech physics research. At its core, GSI operates a powerful particle accelerator system that allows scientists to collide heavy ions with targets or each other. These experiments help researchers explore the fundamental building blocks of the universe, the synthesis of superheavy elements, and the conditions of matter shortly after the Big Bang.

Beyond basic research, GSI is a pioneer in applied science, most notably for developing carbon ion therapy, a highly precise cancer treatment. Currently, they are constructing FAIR, one of the largest international research projects, to further investigate nuclear astrophysics and atomic physics.

To strengthen collaboration between industry and academia, their Technology Transfer Office regularly organizes a roadshow on the GSI campus. On Wednesday, March 18, together with other companies in the industry, our General Manager Mike Schmidt will be there with a table top to answer questions from employees from FAIR (Accelerator Center) and GSI about our Ion Beam Technology.

Review of the event | March 18, 2026

From 10 to 12 March, Paris hosted the JEC, the leading international exhibition for composite materials. We were pleased to be joined by our cooperation partner MIKROMAT GmbH at the joint booth of the Wirtschaftsförderung Sachsen GmbH.
During his tour of the joint booth, Dirk Panter, the Saxon State Minister for Economic Affairs, Labor, Energy, and Climate Protection, also spent a some minutes talking to us about Dresden and Pirna as technology hubs, pictured with Mike Schmidt, General Manager of D.I.S on the left and Thomas Warnatsch, managing partner at Mikromat on the right (picture in the middle).

JEC World in Paris is the world’s leading trade fair for composites and their applications. As a global industry meeting place, it covers the entire value chain – from raw material extraction to the end product.

Over 1,300 exhibitors from more than 100 countries will be presenting their products and services, including industry giants such as Airbus and Dassault, as well as numerous start-ups, research institutes, and specialized SMEs. State-of-the-art fibers (carbon, glass, natural fibers), resins, innovative thermoplastics, and sophisticated manufacturing machines will be on display. There will be a special focus on 3D printing, automation solutions, and sustainable recycling technologies for lightweight components.

The trade fair is aimed at engineers, designers, purchasers, and decision-makers from key industries such as aerospace, automotive, construction, energy (wind power), and sports and leisure. It is the central network for anyone looking for lighter, stronger, and more sustainable material solutions.

Review of the event | March 17, 2026

On three of the six days of the Spring Meeting in Dresden, an industrial exhibition was held in parallel with the conference. The DPG conference is an event that attracts both early-career researchers and experienced decision-makers alike. A hallmark of this conference is its dynamic mix of doctoral students, postdocs, and leading practitioners such as professors and group leaders. This gathering creates a dynamic atmosphere where top researchers and strategists meet to discuss groundbreaking topics across the entire field of solid-state physics.

The exhibition was very well attended by conference participants. At our booth, we were able to answer many questions from interested participants – and we’re sure that some of them will keep our expertise in ion beams in mind for their future research projects.

The Spring Meetings of the German Physical Society (DPG) are central meeting places for physicists from various disciplines. They offer lectures, poster presentations, and discussion forums on current issues in research, teaching, and science policy.

The conference programme is already available. Invited speakers from institutes and universities around the world will provide an overview of their work during the conference week. The symposia of the conference are focused on interdisciplinary topics. In this edition of the Spring Meeting, France will be represented as the guest country by the Société Française de Physique (SFP).

The highly scientific program is rounded off by the presentation of the Gaede Prize and the Dissertation Prize, as well as various social events, a career market and the Exhibition of Scientific Instruments and Literature.

We will be present there with an exhibition booth. Come by and let us talk about our core competency – the ion beam technology. The exhibition will be open from 10 to 12 of March. We are looking forward to meet you in Dresden!

Applications

A transition lens is generally employed to adjust particle energy in set-ups with various beamline potentials along the beam, even under extreme vacuum conditions. This capability enables a range of functions, including beam acceleration or deceleration, energy state adjustment at the start, along or at the end of a beamline, energy matching in extreme vacuum conditions, and guiding charged particle beams through specific potential stages. These functionalities ensure that beamline potential transition segments are optimized for particle transmission and controlled beam divergence.

The 25th International Workshop on Inelastic Ion-Solid Interactions (IISC-25) took place at Steinschaler Dörfl in Frankenfels, Austria, from September 14-19, 2025. This event is organized by the group of Prof. Richard Wilhelm of the Institute of Applied Physics at TU Wien. In terms of content, this conference deals with fundamental aspects of the inelastic interaction of particles with surfaces, for example with the following topics:

• Charge exchange between particles and surfaces
• Scattering of atoms, ions, molecules and clusters
• Cluster/molecular and highly charged ion beams

For many years, we have enjoyed a close working relationship to this group of scientists. They work with our technology as part of their research, and we benefit from their work by being able to adapt and improve our product. That’s why we decided to support this event as a sponsor this year.

Last Saturday, we hosted a recruiting event at our company site in Pirna. Our advertising campaign in the run-up to the event was a resounding success. We attracted a large number of visitors from the surrounding area, both to take a look behind the scenes and to apply for a job with us. In a grand total of seven tours, our guides showed the flow of materials from the warehouse to production, the measuring room, cleaning and shipping, as well as our development area. After the tours, we had in-depth conversations with our visitors, who asked many interesting questions about our company. With strong winds and threatening dark clouds, we shortened our visitors‘ waiting time with hot coffee and ice cream from the local bakery Konditorei Schreiber.

We are delighted that we can now review the surprisingly large number of registered job seekers and invite them to further interviews. We would like to thank all visitors who are interested in the development of our company, all supporters and of course the whole D.I.S team for their amazing teamwork. Well done!

The International Conference on Photonic, Electronic and Atomic Collisions (ICPEAC 2025) in Sapporo focuses on the subjects of semiconductor production, process control and nanotechnology. The agenda for the meeting includes discussion of topics such as photonics, chemical processing, and PVD processes, as well as automation in manufacturing. The experts address the topics of yield improvements, cost reduction and new materials. The programme is designed to appeal to a range of professionals, including researchers, engineers and technology managers from semiconductor factories, research institutions and suppliers. Visitors from industry, sales and business development are seeking partnerships and solutions.

For many years, we have enjoyed a close working relationship with a group of scientists from the Institute of Applied Physics at TU Wien led by Professor Richard Wilhelm (third from the right in the bottom picture). They work with our ion source EBIS-C1 as part of their research, and we benefit from their work by being able to adapt and improve our product. Our ion source has been referenced in various professional settings, including lectures, poster presentations and an invited progress report, highlighting its role in the field of ion beam technology.
