<p>In collaboration with <a href="https://stepnine-engineering.de/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><mark style="color:#ff7f50" class="has-inline-color">StepNine-Engineering</mark></a>, the cleanroom area at D.I.S Germany GmbH was metrologically tested and evaluated in accordance with DIN EN ISO 14644. As part of the qualification and testing services performed, the area’s air handling and cleanroom-related functions were metrologically verified. These included, in particular, particle classification, recovery time measurement, HEPA filter integrity tests, and the technical evaluation of key air handling parameters.<br><br>In the tested state, compliance with the defined air cleanliness requirements according to DIN EN ISO 14644-1, ISO Class 7, was achieved.<br><br>Statement from StepNine Engineering:<br>“This project demonstrates how important thorough technical preparation, reliable measurement data, and clear documentation are for evaluating cleanroom conditions. Many thanks to D.I.S Germany GmbH for their professional collaboration and the trust they have placed in us.”</p>

The exchange with the GSI teams provided valuable insights and reinforces our commitment to developing compact, high-performance solutions for advanced ion beam applications. <p>The GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research in Darmstadt is a world-class facility dedicated to high-tech physics research. At its core, GSI operates a powerful particle accelerator system that allows scientists to collide heavy ions with targets or each other. These experiments help researchers explore the fundamental building blocks of the universe, the synthesis of superheavy elements, and the conditions of matter shortly after the Big Bang.<br><br>Beyond basic research, GSI is a pioneer in applied science, most notably for developing carbon ion therapy, a highly precise cancer treatment. Currently, they are constructing FAIR, one of the largest international research projects, to further investigate nuclear astrophysics and atomic physics.<br><br>To strengthen collaboration between industry and academia, their Technology Transfer Office regularly organizes a roadshow on the GSI campus. <mark style="background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#ff7f50" class="has-inline-color"><strong>On Wednesday, March 18, </strong></mark>together with other companies in the industry, our General Manager Mike Schmidt will be there with a table top to answer questions from employees from FAIR (Accelerator Center) and GSI about our Ion Beam Technology.</p>

<p>From 10 to 12 March, Paris hosted the JEC, the leading international exhibition for composite materials. We were pleased to be joined by our cooperation partner MIKROMAT GmbH at the joint booth of the Wirtschaftsförderung Sachsen GmbH.<br>During his tour of the joint booth, Dirk Panter, the Saxon State Minister for Economic Affairs, Labor, Energy, and Climate Protection, also spent a some minutes talking to us about Dresden and Pirna as technology hubs, pictured with Mike Schmidt, General Manager of D.I.S on the left and Thomas Warnatsch, managing partner at Mikromat on the right (picture in the middle).</p>

<p><strong>JEC World</strong> in Paris is the world&#8217;s leading trade fair for composites and their applications. As a global industry meeting place, it covers the entire value chain – from raw material extraction to the end product.<br><br>Over 1,300 exhibitors from more than 100 countries will be presenting their products and services, including industry giants such as Airbus and Dassault, as well as numerous start-ups, research institutes, and specialized SMEs. State-of-the-art fibers (carbon, glass, natural fibers), resins, innovative thermoplastics, and sophisticated manufacturing machines will be on display. There will be a special focus on 3D printing, automation solutions, and sustainable recycling technologies for lightweight components.<br><br>The trade fair is aimed at engineers, designers, purchasers, and decision-makers from key industries such as aerospace, automotive, construction, energy (wind power), and sports and leisure. <p>On three of the six days of the Spring Meeting in Dresden, an industrial exhibition was held in parallel with the conference. The DPG conference is an event that attracts both early-career researchers and experienced decision-makers alike. A hallmark of this conference is its dynamic mix of doctoral students, postdocs, and leading practitioners such as professors and group leaders. This gathering creates a dynamic atmosphere where top researchers and strategists meet to discuss groundbreaking topics across the entire field of solid-state physics.<br><br>The exhibition was very well attended by conference participants. At our booth, we were able to answer many questions from interested participants &#8211; and we’re sure that some of them will keep our expertise in ion beams in mind for their future research projects.</p>

<p>The Spring Meetings of the German Physical Society (DPG) are central meeting places for physicists from various disciplines. They offer lectures, poster presentations, and discussion forums on current issues in research, teaching, and science policy.<br><br>The conference programme is already available. Invited speakers from institutes and universities around the world will provide an overview of their work during the conference week. The symposia of the conference are focused on interdisciplinary topics. In this edition of the Spring Meeting, France will be represented as the guest country by the Société Française de Physique (SFP).<br><br>The highly scientific program is rounded off by the presentation of the Gaede Prize and the Dissertation Prize, as well as various social events, a career market and the <strong>Exhibition of Scientific Instruments and Literature</strong>.<br><br>We will be present there with an exhibition booth. Come by and let us talk about our core competency &#8211; the <strong>ion beam technology</strong>. The exhibition will be open from <strong><mark style="background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#ff7f50" class="has-inline-color">10 to 12 of March</mark></strong>. <p>Germany has identified nuclear<strong> fusion as a strategic priority at the highest political levels</strong>, with the objective of establishing the world&#8217;s first commercial fusion plant on its territory. A Nuclear Fusion Action Plan (October 2025, status January 2026) outlines the following:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>€2 billion in research, infrastructure, and demonstrator funding by 2029</li>



<li>Germany&#8217;s positioning as a leading research hub and export nation, with strong industry and startup integration</li>



<li>A political consensus that frames fusion as a game changer for CO₂-free, baseload energy. Notwithstanding substantial investments, the initial commercial grid operation is anticipated to occur around the year 2050. The plan is to achieve key technological and industrial milestones this decade.</li>
</ul>

<p>On the conference sideline, a technical exchange was held with participants in the <strong>AM-SHIELD project </strong>(Fraunhofer IWS). The discourse centred on contemporary challenges and solutions in the domain of radiation-resistant materials and hybrid manufacturing strategies for fusion applications. In particular, the requirements for complex structural components in future fusion plants, and accelerated development and evaluation processes for new material concepts, were the subjects of discussion.<br><br>The AM-SHIELD project has been developed to combine additive and conventional manufacturing processes with a view to producing large-volume, functionally integrated structural components for fusion plants. The project also aims to efficiently evaluate the components&#8217; suitability under fusion-relevant loads.</p>

<p>The first conference day began with the official opening by Silke Launert within the framework of the Hightech Agenda Germany. Subsequent plenary sessions addressed national and European fusion strategies:<br><br><strong>P. Schroth (BMFTR):</strong> Federal government action plan and funding landscape<br><strong>E. Righi Steele (European Commission):</strong> European fusion strategy<br><strong>P. Barabaschi (ITER Organization):</strong> Status and challenges of the ITER project<br><strong>M. Lachaise (Fusion for Energy, F4E):</strong> Role of F4E in implementing European fusion infrastructure</p>



<p>In the afternoon, German start-ups presented their approaches:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Proxima Fusion:</strong> Quasi-isodynamic stellarator</li>



<li><strong>Gauss Fusion:</strong> Integrated fusion power plant concept</li>



<li><strong>Marvel Fusion:</strong> Inertial fusion using high-power lasers</li>



<li><strong>Focused Energy:</strong> Additional laser-based fusion approaches</li>
</ul>

<p>The program was complemented by contributions on <strong>enabling technologies</strong>, system concepts, fuel cycles, and the European fusion landscape.</p>

<p>The second conference day included contributions on <strong>ITER, F4E, and IFMIF-DONES</strong>, an overview of the German fusion alliance <strong>ProFusion</strong>, and a <strong>roundtable discussion on the regulatory framework</strong> (ReFus pilot project). Additional presentations addressed standardization issues (DIN), industrial perspectives (Go4Fusion / Framatome), and the scientific outlook of the <strong>IPP</strong>. The conference concluded with closing remarks by <strong>Dr. Arnd Baurichter (FILO)</strong>.<br><br>On the afternoon of the second day, the <strong>Centre for Advanced Laser Applications (CALA)</strong> at <strong>Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich</strong> was visited. The laboratory operates <strong>petawatt laser systems</strong> for research on high-intensity laser–matter interactions. In collaboration with <strong>Marvel Fusion</strong>, the laser is used to irradiate <strong>nanostructured fuel targets</strong>, which are relevant for laser-driven inertial fusion approaches.</p>

<li style="line-height:1.4">High-precision manufacturing, integrated R&amp;D, and scalable industrial processes are key competencies for future fusion projects and are highly relevant to D.I.S Germany.</li>

<p>The Fusion Industrial Liaison Office (FILO) Germany invites fusion-energy industry, stakeholders, experts, and enthusiasts to join the 7th Forum Fusion on <strong><mark style="background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#ff7f50" class="has-inline-color">12-13 January, 2026</mark></strong> at the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics (IPP) in Garching.<br><br>FILO Germany is supported by the Federal Ministry for Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR), implemented by VDI Technologiezentrum (VDI TZ) and serves as the central platform connecting the German fusion ecosystem. FILO is a collaborative forum that brings together industry leaders, start-ups, research organisations and developers to advance fusion energy technologies and future power plants.</p>

<p>The portfolio of D.I.S Germany, which combines <strong>ion beam technology</strong>, <strong>vacuum technology</strong>, and <strong>ultra-high-precision manufacturing</strong>, offers key technologies for future fusion facilities.<br><br>We are on site in Garching with two colleagues to learn more about national and EU strategies in this area, to get to know some of the start-ups and development companies and to listen more generally about the global fusion landscape and special ongoing programs, for example ITER.</p>

<p>In the field of electron and ion beam technology, the use of well-focused particle beams is of paramount importance. D.I.S Germany is proud to provide highly advanced products in the field of charged particle beam optics. These products are designed to be customizable, ensuring a perfect fit for our customers&#8217; facilities.<br><br>Electrostatic lenses are devices that focus charged particle beams. They work by applying different voltages to electrodes, creating a spatially distributed electric potential that deflects the particles and influences the beam opening angle. In a classical einzel lens the outer electrodes are at the same potential not changing the kinetic particle energy.</p>

<p>In contrast, a transition lens is an electrostatic lens whose outer electrodes carry different voltages, causing a change in the particle kinetic energy along the lens. Thus, a transition lens allows the charged particle beam to travel through a potential energy change with optimal control of the beam divergence.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Applications</h2>



<p>A transition lens is generally employed to adjust particle energy in set-ups with various beamline potentials along the beam, even under extreme vacuum conditions. This capability enables a range of functions, including beam acceleration or deceleration, energy state adjustment at the start, along or at the end of a beamline, energy matching in extreme vacuum conditions, and guiding charged particle beams through specific potential stages. These functionalities ensure that beamline potential transition segments are optimized for particle transmission and controlled beam divergence.</p>
